Eye Contact Enhances Trust

Our eyes convey a lot more than we think they do. Looking at a person’s face, we immediately turn our attention to their eyes. A glance at anyone’s eyes and we can make out if the person is happy or sad. Not only that, if someone says something serious to us, without maintaining eye contact, we are likely to consider whatever is being said with suspicion. Communicating with positive eye contact helps to build trust and rapport.

In a sad person, the pupils are contracted and the drooping lids convey an unspoken sadness, low mood or lethargy. The opposite is true when we are interacting with a happy individual. The excitement shows in the dilated pupils. Combined with a joyful facial expression, fast pace of speaking and brisk movements of the hands, one can be very sure that the person is elated and joyful.

Maintaining eye connect with those whom we are speaking to helps in getting their attention and builds their interest further. It makes them feel important too. It becomes apparent to the receiver of the message that, by ensuring eye contact, you are really making an effort to reach out to them! Obviously, eye contact is not staring into the other’s face, but rather a sensitive bonding through our eyes.

In this day and age—when smartphones and hand-held devices yank away our attention every few seconds—the importance of eye contact, while communicating, cannot be over-emphasized.

Healthy, direct and non-fidgety eye contact demonstrates the confidence of the speaker with himself/herself and what he or she is sharing with the other. In addition to that, he or she is transmitting respect and concern for the listener. When one is either unsure or intimidated, the head droops down automatically and the gaze is downward. Even when there is a hidden agenda, and some information is being hidden or deliberately denied, the eyes come forth as ‘fidgety’ and not relaxed. Rapid eye movements can also be noticed by others.

Our senses are so tuned—thanks to the way our brains have evolved—that they serve like a radar that is receptive to all the vibrations and movements in the eyes. Nothing can escape attention!
